What is a Pathology Referral?
A pathology referral allows you to undergo tests, such as blood tests, to monitor various health markers. Your doctor will inform you when a test is necessary, and typically, as you age you may require a blood test at least once a year as part of your routine health check-ups. Instead of being tied to a specific location, your referral is valid at any pathology centre operated by the same company, allowing you to choose the most convenient location for your test.
Types of Pathology Referrals:
- General Blood Tests Routine analysis to assess your overall health.
- Immunology Referrals Tests focused on your immune system.
- Urinalysis and Stool Samples Tests for conditions related to the urinary and digestive systems.
- Allergy Testing Identification of specific allergies.
- STI Testing Blood tests to detect sexually transmitted infections.
How to Use Your Pathology Referral:
- Send Your Referral After your telehealth consultation, you'll receive the referral document via email. Simply use the ‘share’ option to send it directly to your preferred pathology center.
- Print and Submit If you prefer, you can print the referral and bring it to the pathology center in person.
Where to Go for a Pathology Test: You have the flexibility to visit any pathology location that accepts your referral, even if it's from a different provider. Most standard pathology tests don't require a booking.
What to Bring to Your Pathology Test:
Make sure to bring the following:
- The pathology request form from your doctor
- A valid Medicare card
- Contact details for any doctors or specialists who should receive your results
